United States Capital Visitor Center

“Nello was very responsive to changes during the design phase and then met the tight delivery schedule. Stacking panels have already been added to make a conference room acoustically private." — Raynell Bennett, Business Financial Analyst, Architect of the Capital

Project Profiles

DESCRIPTION

The new U.S. Capital Visitor Center is located below ground at the United States Capital building in Washington, D.C. The three story facility provides visitor clearance and orientation before touring the Capital Building. In addition, office and conference rooms were provided to meet the needs of the President, House of Representatives, and Senate.

CHALLENGE

Late in the construction phase of the building, additional private office space and systems furniture work stations were added.  Because the original plans for the area did not include offices, the air conditioning outlets and sprinklers did not fit the new office layout. The wall systems required a wood veneer finish but had to stop short of the ceiling to meet air conditioning and fire safety requirements. The project was on an extremely aggressive timeline in order to meet the occupancy needs of the legislative staffs.

SOLUTION

Nello Wall Systems was selected to build the private office and conference room walls at the initial height of seven feet. The Nello Wall has stacking panel capability, so the additional panel to fill the space to the ceiling could be added after the modifications to the air conditioning supply vents and sprinklers. The walnut stain on the Nello wall panels, doors, and systems panels was mastered to match the Krug case goods. The tight timelines were met by pre-engineering the custom walls and creating production space at both Nello and Krug to allow quick delivery.
